My parents lived in the Town of Arkadelphia, Clark Co. AR, on Clay St.
after they married and here their first child was born.  A couple of sons
also entered the world here.  Then they moved to Sweet Hill where two
daughters were born.  This is the hill behind the old Golden's Gin property
where my father worked as a ginner.

In January 1930, he decided to try his hand at farming and they moved
to the tiny community of Lakeview about 7 miles southeast of Arkadelphia.
(close to Studdard Town.)  He raised many crops to support the family
while still maintaining his seasonal job at the gin.  But it was hard work
with few monetary benefits.  Certainly not enough to merit the efforts,
but this was the true life of most farmer's during that era.  Their bodies
wore out early as they paid dear physical prices for their labors.

In January 1940, again the family moved about four miles northeast  of
Arkadelphia to a tributary of the Ouachita River.  Farming was still
the occupation of choice and we lived here two years.  My remembrances
call forth very few neighbors and no schools.

After the two years, in January 1942, we took up residence in the
Curtis community about nine miles south of Arkadelphia.  Again farming
supplied the family's needs.  Curtis was not far from the Richwoods
community but when you had to walk the distance, it seemed an
awfully long ways.

We lived in Curtis only a year and then moved into the back of a store in the
Town of Arkadelphia in January 1943.  This, too, was on the banks of the
Ouachita River.  For the first time in the children's lives, we had indoor
plumbing.  It was here we lived in September 1943 when my father was
accidentally killed in the gin where he had worked for so many years.

The following year after his death, my mother moved her family south to
El Dorado to be near her parents and here she stayed the remainder
of her life.  You can read it all on this site in Mama's Story.

DEATHS

Donald Raymond Summerhill
Dec. 3 - 1947

NOTE:  My mother used this Bible from 1962 until she died 8 March 1983.
She was reared in the Methodist denomination, attended the Baptist
Church as a teenager and young adult, and when she moved to El Dorado,
AR 4 Jan 1944 after my father died, she joined the First Church of the
Nazarene.   She remained a faithful member until her death.
Mama was the epitome of a christian lady.

The Bible shows the wear and tear of a faithful user.  Even though for many years
she couldn't read it, still she carried it faithfully to God's house.  It's intact, and
today, 4 February 1999, contains most everything within as Mama left it.
