Migration from Tennessee to Oregon
"John Whitlock Hoodenpyl and family migrated to Oregon
(near Gaston)
18 Oct. 1880. They came from Tennessee by train to San Francisco
and (then) on a boat to Oregon."
~Jennie Ranes & Audrey Olsen (Mrs. Vernon)
~ Read the following from Eunice Audrey Olson
in regard to the John Whitlock Hoodenpyl migration~
I received this information from Eunice who was the
wife of
Vernon Olson. Vernon recently passed away.
He was the son of Oberg M. & Mary Alice Hoodenpyl Olsen.
"September 4, 2001 -
Dear Aletha, Thank you for your nice letter & copies of pictures. I
want
to fill in some blanks & also correct some errors (I believe).
My husband, Vernon Olsen, lived with his Grandmother Mary Hoodenpyl
until she was 88 years. I mean his family lived in the same home as
Mary.
She would stay with some of her other children at times but Laurelwood
(near Gaston, OR) was her home. Vernon was born in that house and
lived until he went into U. S. Military Service in April 1942. So he
had
heard the Hoodenpyl history & etc. many times as discussed by his
grandmother, his mother Alice and his Aunt Jennie. Also, I talked
with
Aunt Jennie and my mother-in-law about the Hoodenpyl's trip from
Tennessee to Oregon. So, I believe it is a gross mistake to say they
came by wagon train to Oregon.
All of the above gave the version of their trip.
'They came by train to San Francisco, Cal. and on up by boat to Oregon.
Aunt Jennie remembered the trip. She was a very intelligent and
reliable
person with a wonderful memory...I believe Oregon History will verify
there were no wagon trains coming from Tennessee that late to
Oregon.'
I have a book of births, names, marriages with dates
that belonged to
Alice Hoodenpyl Olsen. Also on back pages of a book 'Bee Keeping'
I have, there is written in John Whitlock Hoodenpyl's hand writing the
names, birthdates & town and county of birth of each of his children.
And in his handwriting, are these words,
'the fourth child was born 25 of Jan. 1876. This child has the
privilege
to nameing of herself. Lucy Jane Hooddenpyl.'
Aunt Jennie & Uncle Bert Raines only had one child
named Oveda Verdell
(called Veda). She was born 30 June 1905 at her grandmother's home.
She died probably 15 years or so after Aunt Jennie. Lived in Calif...
The picture of the boat was Oberg Olsen's picture and was of a bunch
of fishermen in Svalnaer, Norway. Among the men was the husband of
a cousin of Oberg's by the name Barghild. Oberg also
had a sister by
that name. I have a copy of that picture, also."
Much appreciation to Eunice Audrey Olsen for sharing.
It will enhance
our research! She also identified the boat picture on our
Hoodenpyl Unidentified Pictures page! |

NOTE in regard to Thomas Alexander:
"John Whitlock's son, Thomas Alexander, was quite a businessman
it seems. The photograph
I sent you (see below) was minus Thomas Alexander (referred to as uncle
Alex.) Apparently he
had a sawmill in Idaho and must have been there when the picture
was taken. When he returned
to Gaston, OR he started another sawmill in Seagers, OR (this mill is no
longer in operation and
was located just outside Gaston.) Most of his relatives were workers
in the mill. Alex kept his
mill operating with the help of his nephews. Dad even filled-in one
day and decided that was too
much work and that he'd better stay in school so he could better his
possibilities. Dad's brothers
Irwin and Carroll worked in the mill for some time as did Vernon and Phillip
Jr. (little Phillip.)
I remember Dad telling me you could always tell a mill worker, they were
absent a digit or two
(fingers & thumbs.)"
~Terry Hoodenpyl Dana

Alexander & Winifred had five children. |

(written on back)
Jennie and Bert
"This is Lucy Jane (Jennie) Hoodenpyl daughter of John
Whitlock
Hoodenpyl. We always called her Aunt Jennie. With her husband
Bert Ranes. I think this picture was taken on the steps of the home
of Jane's mother, Mary Elizabeth Bridges Hoodenpyl, probably taken
about 1903. This home was located in a community called Laurelwood
(Oregon), about 5 miles from Gaston, Oregon. This is where Mary
Elizabeth lived after the death of John Whitlock. Vernon Olson should
be able to verify this as he lived in this house most of his early
years.
Alice Hoodenply was Vernon Olson's mother."
~Herschell Hoodenpyl |
The following excerpt is from Jennie's obituary, Gaston,
Oregon:
"Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Ranes, 82, who had
been a resident of this
area most of her life since coming here in 1880 were held...Forest Grove.
Mrs. Ranes
had been suffering with cancer for the past several years and since October
1857 she
had been making her home with her daughter at Fullerton, Calif. She
died December 5
at Anaheim, Calif.
Born January 25, 1876 at Victoria, Tenn., the daughter of John
and Mary Hoodenpyl,
Mrs. Ranes came with her family to this area in 1880, coming to Cherry
Grove which
was then called Patton Valley. Her parents bought a farm four miles
east of Gaston
where she grew to womanhood and lived until her marriage to William Albert
Ranes on
July 1, 1903...
She was a member of Forest Chapter No. 42 Order of Eastern
Star and had been a 51
year member of the Lodge and was a Worthy Matron in 1918. She was also
a member
of the Gales Creek Woman's Club, the Extension Unit. She had been a
member of the
Congregational church, having been baptized and united with the church
at Gaston in
1897.
Mrs. Ranes was an elementary school teacher, teaching her
first school in this area
in 1893. She taught her last eleven years at Gales Creek before retiring
in 1949 after
having taught over a period of 56 years. The Jennie Ranes Jr. High
at Gales Creek
was so named in her honor.
Surviving is a daugher Mrs. Louis (Veda)
Banducci, Fullerton, Calif., a sister, Mrs.
Oberg (Alice) Olsen, Gaston; a granddaughter, Mrs. Barbara
Gage, Chehalis, Wash.
and three great grandchildren...
Casketbearers were all nephews of Mrs. Ranes, Vernon Olsen,
Bill, Eldon, Herb,
Phillip and Lloyd Hoodenpyl. Concluding rites and interment were at
the Forest
View Cemetery at the side of her late husband William Albert Ranes who
preceded
her in death here August 3, 1954." |
