MOORE, JOHN

b. 05 September 1761, Louisa County, Virginia
d. 06 January 1842, Bedford County, Tennessee
m. Elenor Mabrey 1787, Rowan County, North Carolina

John Moore enlisted in Rowan County, North Carolina,
during 1778 or 1779 under Capt. Robert Gillaspie.  His
first tour was in pursuit of Tories that never were brought
to battle.  He joined Capt. Peter Hedricks in a company
of mounted men at Salisbury and went in pursuit of Tories
and was in a skirmish at a place called The Crossroads.
He returned home after about a month.  About that time,
Gen. Morgan came to his father's house, being an old
acquaintance of the family.  Moore joined Morgan and
was attached to Lt. Col. Washington's unit and was in the
rear guard during the battle at Cowpens.  After the battle,
he guarded the prisoners to the Yadkin River and was in
the skirmish that took place there.  Moore made his way
to his father's house (about one and a half miles from the
river crossing) and had not been there more than two
hours when he was taken prisoner by Tories led by his
father's near neighbors, Capts. John Smith and Barry
Bowers.  The next morning about daybreak they marched
Moore to Cornwallis and delivered him up.  Cornwallis
asked Moore how long he had been in the rebel service.
Moore answered that he could not have been in the
rebel service, that his father and mother were Quakers
(which was the fact) and that he understood that the
Quakers were not compelled to bear arms.  Cornwallis
sent Moore home but made him promise to never take up
arms against the king.  The promise was reluctantly
given and the next day Moore went to Salisbury, joined
Capt. Gillaspie, and remained with him in pursuit of
Tories until Cornwallis surrendered.  Moore was granted
pension on his application executed 15 August 1832
while residing in Bedford County, Tennessee.  His widow
was granted pension on her application executed
8 December 1843.  FPA W40; PI.

Some family notes picked up from researchers:

"I can remember my grandfather telling my mother that his father
was one of 7 sons of Green M. Moore, who (all) fought on different
sides (Union and/or Confederate) during the war and many never
spoke to each other again."

"I know that John Moore's mother's name was Sarah and found that
in land records from Virginia and North Carolina."

"...Eleanor and John went to Bedford Co. TN about the year 1810
where they lived and died - John on 6 Jan 1842 and Eleanor on
9 Dec 1851...I have traced two of their three sons from Bedford Co.
TN to Arkansas but have lost definite track of where they went
from that point."

"John Moore was a son of John and Sarah Moore of Rowan Co. NC.
The Moore's were Quakers; but John Moore who moved to Rowan
Co. NC was disowned for 'Marrying out of the Quaker unity.'"

The following excerpt from deposition taken from
Elenor G. Moore 26 Sep 1834 - Bedford Co. TN

for her brother? Leonard Marbury (b 1759).

"...says she does well recollect seeing Leonard Marbury engaged in
fighting the British & Tory's at Savannah River & distinctly recollects
carrying ammunition to Leonard Marbury where they were engaged
in shooting across the Savannah River at the British & Tory's.  Whilst
the bulets was flying & whising plentifully among the Americans across
the river from the enemy - at this place she said Col. L. Marbury took
the British & Tory's prisoners...that she knows he (Leonard b 1759) was
considered a faithful soldier who was applauded for such after
his return at the end of the war & well received by the Whigs
of that county and also recollects his return home from the war
to North Carolina with military clothing on so as to impress
her with the belief he had bore some office."
