TreeMarbury/Marberry, JohnTree

Montgomery Co. NC - Stewart Co. TN - Henry Co. TN

This line became Marberry!

John was probably born in Rowan Co. NC.  He's believed to be one
of the sons of Francis on the 1790 Rowan Co. NC Census.  His first marriage
was 1790 - 1800 (first child was under 10  years old in 1800).
Year of birth was established from the below Deposition which stated he
was about 64 years in 1833.

to George Crowell.  The deed stated that John & Tabitha were of Montgomery Co. NC.
This land was inherited from her parents Abraham & Elizabeth Forrest.)

Question!

John Marberry purchased 100 acres of land
on the French Broad River at the mouth of Big
Laurel River (creek) in Buncombe Co. NC on
April 30, 1808.
Is this the same John Marberry?

Remember...Leonard Marbury (b 1759) stated in his
Revolutionary War pension application that he moved
to Buncombe Co. NC:
"...then after 8 or ten years to the County of Buncombe,
same State (NC)....then after 10 or 12 years to
Warren County, Tennessee...."

Also, Leonard's son Benjamin, married Mary "Polly" Hoodenpyl
in Greenville. TN, 23 Dec 1808.  So these Marbury/Marberry's
were all over this area of the country.

Note:  Another possibility is that this John Marberry
was the (son of Leonard b 1759) and he was in Warren Co.
TN in 1820 and on to Haywood Co. TN by 1830.  This John
married abt 1802 - 1808.

An Interesting Fact
Gavel

John Marberry was the first county judge of Henry Co. TN
in the first public records from the Court dated
4 Dec 1821.  Recorded 28 May 1822.

Deposition

The 24 Dec 1833 Henry Co. TN Deposition that John Marbury/Marberry
gave for his brother? Leonard (b 1759).  This record mislead us for
years.  The county looks to be Maury, which researchers assumed was
correct, but the Deposition was taken in Henry Co. TN.

(Robert T. Marbury researched this and found that
John H. Warren was Justice of the Peace in Henry Co. TN.)

I have no idea the order of births.

* Note per Jacob: Jacob's parentage is debatable.  If you
have Jacob & Gincy in your lineage, please do get in touch!

**Note per Caroline:
When Caroline died, her daughter Martha Biles was taken into
the household of John Marbury, Martha's  grandfather.  Ann E. Marberry is shown
as head of household in the 1850 Census with Martha Biles, 15, and Thomas
Green, 25, (presumably her son by first marriage.)  Ann's age is shown as
66 (b 1784) making her about 54 when she married John Marbury.  John
is living with the Nathaniel Peeples family in 1850, age 91.  Have no idea
why Ann & John were living in separate households.

***Note per John Marberry, second husband of Caroline:  It's thought this
John could have been the son of John Marbury of Haywood Co. TN.  If so,
this John and Caroline were second cousins.   Also, this would be the
Haywood Co. connection as recorded by early Henry Co. TN researchers
who confused the John Marbury in Haywood Co. TN with the
John Marbury/Marberry in Henry Co. TN.

****Note per Nathaniel Peebles.  He's listed on the 1830 Haywood Co. TN
Census as Nathaniel Peoples, same page as Benjamin Marbery & John Marberry.

On this census, Nathaniel had 2 males & 1 female under 10.
Dau. Tabitha J. was born abt 1828, Son John Nathan was born abt 1830
and was Son James b abt 1826?  Seems likely and that it was this Nathaniel &
Nancy Jane who migrated to Haywood Co. TN right after their marriage.
They were back in Henry Co. by 1850 Census.  Between 1850 & 1863 they went
to Benton Co. TN.  This last migratory per Patty Nipko research.
