Family Tradition: "Sallie married a Nichols and moved to Arkansas."

As tradition often goes, this one too, is in error.  The descendants state
that Charles & Sarah didn't migrate to Arkansas, but lived in
North Carolina and Tennessee!  Records prove this is true!

BulletNote:  Each of us need to remove this error from our research files!  When
misinformation is continually passed, it takes years to undo!

Did Sarah & Charles marry in North Carolina and move across the
state line into Tennessee, or did they marry there?  To my knowledge,
a  marriage bond has not been found.
Philip Hoodenpyl was building and maintaining the
Hoodenpyl Turnpike to Newport, TN during this time period.

Cocke County, Tennessee

It was here the Nichols lived and raised their family!

In 1850, Sarah was living in the home of her daughter Mary "Polly"
and James McKay.  She was listed as 65 years old.
But she died in the home of her daughter Judith and Thomas B. Huff.

Tombstones

Sarah's Burial Place

"She (Sarah) is buried in the Huff Cemetery in Bridgeport,
just outside of  Newport, TN and was living with
Judith and Thomas (Huff) when she died."

Tennessee Nichols Line
        by: May Nichols Hackney
(Great Aunt of Bruce Morrison)

"I shall introduce the Nichols line in Tennessee, as in that state, dwelt the
earliest of the name of which we have any knowledge.  The house in which
my great grandfather, Charles, lived is still standing and may have been
built by his father, Philip.

(Note: Charles' father Philip does not agree with above
research of Linda Holmes who states his name was James.)

This old homestead is located close to Bridgeport (TN) and is now in
proximity to one of the Stokeley food factories.  When last I heard,
Cousin John Jones and his wife occupied the house and were keeping it
in repair.  Another landmark in Bridgeport, is the lovely colonial
residence of descendants of Major James Huff, a nephew of Thomas.  My
husband and I, chancing to be in that vicinity in the early forties, called at
this home.  Josephine Huff, the gracious hostess, prevailed upon us to stay
for dinner.  She was most entertaining and gave a thrilling account of her
experiences on a recent trip abroad.  Later, George remarked that if
Josephine was typical of my Tennessee relatives, he would like to know
them all!  Other members of this family are Elizabeth, Annie, Frank,
Jesse, and Mrs. (Adeline) William R. Rosenblatt of Atlanta.

While, here now, in 1957, many descendants of early Tennesseans are
scattered throughout the Carolinas and other states, we associate the
largest number with the little town of Del Rio, Tennessee.

In the early days, following the Revolutionary War, Del Rio, Tennessee
and vicinity were sparsely settled, and there were few families into which
one would wish to marry.  This, coupled with the fact that they were in
close proximity, accounts for the large number of intermarriages among
our ancestors.  My grandfather's sister, Judith, married a Huff and had
the largest family of any Nichols.  It was mainly through intermarriages of
her descendants that we can claim relationship with a number of Stokelys,
Burnetts and a few others as well as with other branches of Huffs.

While Charles Nichols and his wife, Sara, had but one son, James
Americus my grandfather, they had four daughters.

James Americus (1824 - 1890) m 1846 Mary Ann Barnard (1826 - 1878).
My grandfather, Colonel James A. Nichols was quite a 'peppy' old
gentleman.  His acquaintances teasingly called him a 'sport.'  He liked
young people and children.   I recall that he paid us grandchildren a penny
a hair to rid him of gray ones.  We were faithful on this job as you may well
imagine.  He was given to singing and often sang at all hours.  Two of his
favorite songs which I recall were, 'Listen To The Mocking Bird,' and
'No Sir, No.'

He was sincerely interested in each and every individual in his hometown
of Marshall (NC). This village was most unique in having but a single street.
It ran the length of the building area between the mountains and the French
Broad River.  My grandparents spent their entire married life there.
Their children were: Charles (1847 - 1911), Thomas (1849 - 1869), and
John born in 1860.  Thomas, at the age of 19 years, was stabbed to death by
a drunken stage coach driver while he was endeavoring to make peace
between this man and some hot headed boy passengers.  Thomas was a
splendid boy who was greatly beloved...."

Bruce Morrison  - A descendant of Sarah & Charles through
James Americus & Mary Ann Nichols.
The first to provide positive confirmation of our Hoodenpyl connection and to send
me the names of Charles & Sarah's children.
"I obtained this information from my grandmother (Winifred Ross Massey)
and my mother (Carolyn Winifred Nichols) prior to their deaths.
Additionally, the same information is in a genealogy book I have

Bruce, I can't thank you enough for sharing this much needed information with our family!

Thanx to Donna Nichols whose husband Gordon Nichols is a descendant through
James Americus & Mary Ann Nichols.
Donna found me as I was in the process
of building this page.

Their research added additional information.

Thanx to Max K. Huff for sharing his and Dr. Granville W. Hough's
research on the Internet.  Max Huff's site is the epitome of striving to reach as many

Thanx to Kathy Bialk - For a while we thought we were "cousins" and
who knows, we may find that we ARE somewhere down the road.

A very special thanx to Linda Sheehan...a very diligent  family researcher who
enjoys sharing her findings!
