Question:

What was the relationship between

Charles (Sr.) & William (Sr.) Summerhill
of North Carolina?

Were they father/son, or brothers?

We need the answer to establish the lineage
of those who migrated into the state.

Charles' date of birth has not been determined.  William's date of birth is
estimated abt 1768 according to Census.  His son Horace stated on the 1880
Lauderdale Co. AL Census that his father was born in Maryland.

The earliest North Carolina record for Charles is in Halifax District 1781.
Halifax District at that time, encompassed the counties of Warren, Franklin,
Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax, Northampton & Martin.  He
received
compensation
for, what I believe, were provisions he provided
to the Continental Army or Militia.
 (See copy below.)

No records have been found for Charles between 1781 - 1788.

So...where was Charles during this time period and before 1781?

He's listed on the following North Carolina List of Taxables:

1788, 1789, 1790 Granville Co. NC - Island Creek District.
(The 1788 Granville Co. Tax List was used for the 1790 Census.)
  1791
Granville Co. NC - Nutbush District
1792 - 1793 Warren Co. NC - Nutbush District

William's entry with Charles in relation to an October 1792 Court Martial
in Warren Co. is the first record I've found for him.
  He and Charles
are listed with several local men.  They were fined agreeable to law.
(Why?)  William's presence indicates he was at the age of majority.
Feather & QuillExcerpt from the record: "Contains administrative as well as judicial proceedings
of the Warren Co. Militia."

A year later, Charles died and William was appointed administrator of
his estate.  Nov. 1793 Warren Co. NC.

Who were William's parents?  Were they Charles, Sr. & Elener Summerhill
of Warren County
and possibly Saint Mary's County, Maryland?  I ask that you
study the information I've provided on my Summerhill sites.   I welcome anything;
sources, family history, Bible records, stories, proof, etc., to connect William &
Charles to the St. Mary's Co. MD Summerhill's.  Had the St. Mary's Court
House not burned in 1831, we would possibly have our answers.

Feather & QuillNote: I have not ruled out the Unknown (James?) & John Summerhill of
Rutherford Co. NC and GA as possible sons of Charles (Sr.)

It's my belief that Unknown, John & Charles were related in some way.  I list
them below for research purposes only.
 I can't prove a connection.
