The following information was sent to me in 1991 by Alice Summerhill for inclusion in
my book, "Our Summerhill Family 1665 - 1991."  The majority of the material included
on this page came from Alice and I do appreciate her sharing.

The Summerhill's in Pennsylvania can prove their lineage to John, born 1797
Mercer County, PA., and his sister Mary Jane.  Their parents are
believed to be James and Hannah Summerhill.

1850 Census, Allegheny Co. PA - Plum Township

Hannah Summerhill, age 83 b PA
Elizabeth Summerhill, age 21
Joseph Summerhill, age 66

(The above were in
Uzziah & Jane Summerhill Stewart household.)

"In April, 1824, a paper was filed in Allegheny County Estate records for James Summerhill,
showing Hannah Summerhill and Uzziah Stewart as administrators.  Because of these items, it is
my belief that John and Jane's father was James Summerhill and their mother was
Hannah Summerhill...

"...The name Campbell crops up in the John Summerhill line as well as Jane
Stewart; therefore I believe Hannah's maiden name was Campbell and her father was
probably Joseph Campbell.

"There was a Naomi Summerill living in Philadelphia, PA on the 1790 Census who had
4 boys and 3 girls in her home.  She was listed as 'spinster,' which could mean she wove
cloth, or was perhaps an older sister heading a household with younger children.  I
haven't connected her to my ancestors, however.

"Generally, the whole clan used the spelling, Summerill until the 1900's.  Dad told me the
name was really Summerhill but didn't know why the h
had been dropped or when.  Hannah
used the Summerhill spelling in 1824.

"My great-grandfather, James S. Summerhill, was a wagon maker; my grandfather,
James A. and my father, Albert F., were farmers.  There is definitely a trend to carpentry
in our family because Dad could make most anything (although not fancy), and my youngest
brother is very good at carpentry, as well as his sons.

"My grandfather was thin and stooped, with sunken eyes, scanty hair and white mustache
and beard.  We only visited them about once or twice each summer, as we had no
transportation other than horses when I was a child.  The Summerhill's were not talky,
and I never found out much about them as persons."

Note: Received from Karen Bender Lust December 1990: "William Stewart died
intestate leaving his land in Plum Township, Allegheny Co. PA, to be divided equally among
his 8 children.  Uzziah Stewart,
born 1790, bought all the land from his siblings.
Uzziah's sister, Elizabeth, had also died by then so her share was divided by her three
children.
One of them, Elizabeth Summerhill McKee, is my ancestor.  Her father was John Summerhill.
Elizabeth married Thomas McKee and in 1855 or 1856, had one son, Lawrence Perry
McKee.  She died in 1864 and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA."
