Lethe's mother's name is unknown and it's believed she died in childbirth
with Lethe.  Lethe's father is thought to be Leonard Cardwell of Granville

Co. NC.  If so, he remarried to Lucy Strum 18 Nov 1802 Granville Co.
Leonard Cardwell was one of the oldest sons of Thomas & Mary Cardwell
of Granville Co. and operated an Ordinary at Chalk Devil.
  Lethe named
a daughter Lucy Ann,
I'm sure after the step-mother who had raised her.

William Jr. & Family Migrate

When William Jr. was born, the family lived in Island Creek District,
Granville Co.  His mother, Martha, died when he was a child and his father,
left a widower with five children soon remarried to
Elizabeth "Betsy"Bryant Walker, a widow.
At about seventeen years, in the summer of 1820, William Jr. married
Lethe/Letha Cardwell.   In November 1825, he purchased 100 acres
of land
on Long Creek and sold it in August 1828 to Thomas N. Pulliam.
Selling the land, in all probability, meant he was migrating.

Late 1828 or early 1829, he and family migrated to Wilson Co. TN where he
shows up in Wilson Co. Minutes in Sept. 1829
.  I would think the migration
transpired that spring.  In February 1834, he purchased 133 acres on
Barton's Creek
. September 1840, he was designated overseer on the
building of Coles Ferry Road.  During my trip to Lebanon and Wilson
Co. TN, I drove down the Coles Ferry Road and along Barton's Creek.
I envisaged the rugged men with their wagons and teams of mules,
clearing trees,
brush and weeds; forging a road, joining communities.

I believe my great-great-grandfather, a man in his late 30's, was
responsible and determined to see the job finished.  How many times
had he traversed this same road?
I know his footprints are there, albeit wind
and time have masked their traces.

Built First Brick House In Wilson Co. TN

"During this period William Jr. built the first brick house in Wilson Co.
It stood on the Lebanon square where the bank now stands."

William Jr. was the brick contractor on new Soule College

Soule College - Murfreesboro, TN

Between the years 1841 - 1850 he moved his family to Rutherford,
an adjoining county and here he continued his brick making business
and was awarded the contract for the brick work on the new Soule College
(private school for girls) in Murfreesboro, construction beginning July 3, 1853.
It was a three-story brick building, located four blocks south of the Court
Square on Lebanon (Maple) Street.  Middle Tennessee Electric Membership
(now occupies the area.  From the Minutes of the Annual Conference of the
M.E. Church, South, 1851 - 1852:
"...the following week the brick work was awarded to
William Summerhill, who had made his bid in these words:
'To the committee of the Female Institute: I will erect the
brick work of the whole building of the
Female Institute,
after the manner and form of the drawing in the Town of
Murfreesboro: the brick to be measured and counted
according to the ruler of brick work for Seven Dollars
and Forty Cents, per thousand, counting the openings out.'"

The following from a Chancery Court sale in the Murfreesboro
Monitor, August 22, 1868:
"For elegance, unity of design, and adaptation to educational purposes
this College edifice has but few superiors, if any.  The form of the
house is that of a massive Roman cross, three stories high,
135 feet long, and 115 feet wide.

The brick work is executed in the finest style."
