William was born about 1768, probably in Maryland.
Parents have not been proven.
William first shows up in North Carolina records in
1792 where he and
Charles Summerhill are listed with several local men in a Court Martial
Preceding. William's presence indicates he was at least 21 years
old.

Source: "Contains administrative as well as judicial
proceedings of the Warren Co. Militia" They were fined
(along with others) agreeable to law.

In Nov. 1793 he administered Charles Summerhill (Sr.)
Estate.
1794 - 1795 finds him on the Warren Co. Tax List in Nutbush District.
1796 - 1797 he's shown in Granville Co. Nutbush District.
Note: The Warren Co. and Granville Co.
NC lines were re-drawn
in this time period and it's quite possible
Charles & William's place of residence never
changed.

About 1797/98 he married Martha

After moving into Granville Co., William never left.
10 May 1807, he
purchased 162 acres in Tabbs Creek District, then purchased 28 Sep 1811
from John Hayes "a small piece of land containing one
acre more or less a
little below or opposite the said Summerhill's
spring, south, the line
beginning at the mouth of said spring at a white oak and running
from
thence 86 yards to a marked red oak at the crook of the
branch
between said Hayes and Summerhill."
