Robert Bell was one of the organizers of the Barton Creek Baptist Church
in Lebanon, TN.

BulletThe above picture of the Oak tree was taken in 1982.  It still grows in the yard of
Robert Bell & Juliet's old homeplace.
How old is it? Bill Montana: "Looks to be over 200 years."
Surely Robert Bell & family enjoyed its shade!

Robert Bell Sypert

Born in Tennessee to Thomas & Sarah Laseter/Lassater Sypert who had
migrated to TN from Chatham Co. NC about 1795 - 1797.  Records are found for
Thomas in Blount, Sumner and, finally, Wilson Counties TN where he died in Jan. 1831.

Thomas was born in 1752 Chatham Co. NC and served in the Revolutionary War.
His father was Francis Sypert of Lancaster Co. PA and Chatham Co. NC.  Sarah died
Dec 1843 Wilson Co. at the age of 75.  Her father was William Laseter/Lassater.

Robert Bell first married Priscilla Davis and she birthed five children.  She
probably died of complications from childbirth with son Robert Stephen.

~ See Davis Lineage Below ~

In 1834, he married Juliet Hunt Jackson who birthed ten children.

About 1854, Robert Bell & family migrated to Harrison Co. TX.  The earliest
known record is a 200 acre land purchase 13 Nov 1856 from J. E. Whitehorn.

Excerpt from "The Hallsville Cemetery" book:

"Robert brought the first Tennessee Walking Horses to this area... In coming back to Ash
Springs, Robert's entourage of wagons loaded with family members, household goods, farm
equipment, slaves and a big drove of Tennessee Walkers, attracted much attention to

towns-people as they tried to pass through.  In nearly every town, they'd have to stop until
the men came out and viewed the rare site."

He built a large log house which was located about 2 miles NE of today's
Hallsville, now the property of Dee Sypert Weeks.
 Here, he and Juliet
lived the remainder of their lives and reared their ten children.   He died
there in 1878.  Juliet died about ten years later in late 1888 or early 1889.

Searching Out The Sypert Family

Early in my ancestry quest, I found Jeanne Hatzenbuehler Montana, a Sypert
descendant who was willing to share her immense knowledge of the family.  A Sypert
Family Reunion was coming up in Hallsville, Harrison Co. TX and Jeanne extended
an invitation.  This was June of 1982.  What a thrill to meet and fellowship with so
many cousins that I didn't even know existed only a year before.  One of my favorite
things to see was Robert Bell's old homeplace.  What a wonderful experience to traverse
the land, view the well and ponder at the family gravesite.

It was here, among this group of cousins, I first felt the deep kinship and binding ties that
comes from blood relations who share the same heritage.  At the time, I was a novice
researcher, scarcely knowing how to fill in a family group sheet.  And, even though
everyone was helpful, two family members will always share a very special place in my
heart in regard to my Sypert lineage; Jeanne Montana & Syble Sypert Dwight.
Jeanne and I are from the first marriage and Syble from the second.

Syble has compiled and distributed numerous Sypert family information packets.
These packets show a major act of love by Syble in this endeavor because they
contain a wealth of Sypert family names, dates, stories, pictures, migrations,
happenings, etc.  Anyone interested in the Sypert family should revel in the
amount of information Syble has compiled.

For several years, Jeanne published a Sypert Newsletter.  I've been blessed to have
copies of all.  She, also, has a huge database of family information.  In fact, the Sypert
history has been so well written and documented by Syble and Jeanne, I've not had
to do any major research on the family.  I can open the packets or a Newsletter, sit
back, read and enjoy, knowing it happened just as they've said.

To both ladies I owe much gratitude!

Robert Bell fathered 15 children by his two wives, recorded all of them
and his original record was found in Juliet's trunk not too long ago.
Even though time had taken its toll on the papers, most names
and dates were still readable.
What a tremendous find and asset to our genealogy search!

This page is dedicated to those wonderful Sypert men who left home and family to fight
for the cause in which they believed.  Some may not have been old enough to fully
understand the circumstances that awaited them, but their response to the call of duty

exemplifies their character and responsibility.  I commend them one and all.  They
have proven themselves worthy of our highest esteem.
